... True Friendship ...

… I’ve promised myself, that if i ever write a blog, i will start by writing about this ….

Tallin, March 2003

It was an AIESEC conference, IPM 2003, when the first time i met this guy . Lets just call him Mr Potato :) . A bloody funny guy … what’s more funny is why that is the only thing i remember about him … hahhahahha . Wait … except of course, that we and some other MCPs from AP were singing until 5 am in the morning ….. Karaoke-ing to be more precise :)

Pegasus Reef Hotel, Somewhere near Colombo, 2004

I met him again in another conference .. this time is more intense. we talk about more stuff beside jokes, we talk about our work. We challange each other view ( or maybe he’s the one challanging me hahahhaahaha ) about a lot of things . In short we have a good time and good discussions.

In AIESEC conferences, there is a custom in a conference that you put a sugar cube for people. Sugar cube is a way of expressing thank you, appreciation, respect, love or whatever impression or impact u get from a person and you want to let that person know trough a piece of paper that you put inside an envelope. This envelepe were stick to a wall and people can put the paper to which envelope he/she want. The content of this envelope should’t be opened until you leave the conference. So, if you get a sugar cube you will read it when you’re on the way or back home.

People who made/had a lot of friend or make good impression /impact to people troughout the conference get a lot of this sugar cube. I’m not that popular or make that many impact.

Anyway, I remember Mr Potato need to go back earlier to his homeland before the conference end … and he put a piece of paper in my sugar cube envelope.

After i got home, I read it. It is not a very emotional sugar cube ..but there is a line at the end of the sugar cube that said " … i’m offering you a true friendship ….. " .

Medan, October 2005

God make pathways for me to work in Mr Potato’s homeland. One day after a hectic work of auditing SAP. I got a phonecall at 1 am in the morning from AIESEC Head Office that basically means that i need to quit my current job and flew to Mr Potato’s Homeland. I got a new job.

For AIESEC-ers, u might have experienced in this kind of stuff when u’re travelling. …. yess Visa Stuff. Like most of the AIESEC-ers my visa application to Mr Potato’s Homeland is not that smooth.

Thanks God Mr Potato helped me by trying to endorsed me through one of his colleague and the visa problem solved. Thanks dude.

Jakarta, a week before leaving to Mr Potato’s Homeland. 2005

We had an online chat.

Mr P. : Edwin, where r u going to stay when u arrive

Me : Dunno yet ….

Mr P. : U can stay in my place 1st before u got a place.

Mr : Thanks dude.

KL,March 2005

Arriving at KL i took a train to KL Central and there you go …. Mr Potato & Miss Lim picked me up. Thanks ok ..(and Miss Lim of course). While i’m there, Mr Potato always try to include me and integrate me with his circle of friends (i would say it is more like a family),playing futsal (which i’m really suck in it), a countless supper together and long discussion until 2 am, and so much more. beside my wonderful AIESEC Malaysia MC’s friends, for me, Mr Potato is my closest family there.

Perhentian Island, 2005

This trip i’ll never forget .This is a trip to a wonderful island called Perhentian. A Less commercially managed island with clear water and wonderful scenery. Mr Potato ask me whether i want to join him with his friends ( lets just call this group The Potato Family ;)

We have a very good time there. Dinner by the beach under the full moon. Snorkling the whole day …. i never see such a clear water before and a wonderful underwater scenery. Playing cards and joke all nite ( playing mafia ,… hahahah). Its a great weekend. And of course great friends! Thanks Dude.

KL, Anas’s Place 25th Dec 2005.

This is almost the end of my contract working in Mr Potato’s Homeland. I’ll be leaving soon in early January 2007

At around 4pm I was reading books for free in Borders like usual, in one of the Biggest Mal just outside KL, trying to spend my time on this holiday. This is what i like there also .. reading books for free ahhahahhaha …. limited budget lah.

Anyway, all of a sudden Mr Potato called and ask me whether i’m free that evening. I said yes … them he invited me to have a Christmas dinner at Anas’s place, Boyfriend of Immy also a member of Mr Potato’s family.

I come there and enjoyed the potluck party they have there. almost all of the Mr Potato’s Family were there. a really nice athmosphere. joking and laughing as usual.

Until there is a time for exchanging gift! Bloody hell …. i’m so surprised and i don’t bring any gift :(. So ashamed to be more precise hahahahhaaha…. speechless and don’t know what to do.

So i was there stunned while everyone one by one exchange and open their gift and i’m just looking at them opening the gift … still stunned. While i’m speechles trying to compose my nervousness. Then suddenly one person give me a gift. . . . Edwin, this is for you!

I’m so surprised. i don’t know if i will get a present. i thought i will just come by to have dinner together and eat and just chatting with them. I really don’t expect this. The present was a book about Opening chapter of Quran. ….. the present was great .. but the greater feeling i had , was that i felt that i have a family there. like a family …. i just feel so blessed. I’m very happy. Thanks dude.

6 Jan 2007.

This day i flew back to Bandung, an Air Asia budget flight which i have booked since several months before. Last Nite Mr Potato and some close friend of mine spend the whole nite until morning and together went to the airport to say till we meet again :)

Along the way back i reflect back , to a sugar cube letter that Mr Potato gave me in 2004 …. he offered me a true friendship …. and i guess he gave me his word , walk the talk as some might say …. A true friendship that is …..

Thanks Dude.

PS : Hi potato family … i miss you guys a lot!!
